Liverpool Road clean up
Recently the local Labour Party have put out a survey asking residents to contact us about environmental issues that concern them.
One of the main issues that came out from the survey was litter in various areas around Ashton. One these areas was Liverpool Road and as a result last Thursday a team of volunteers lead by Ann Rampling went and cleaned up the area - see photo above. A total of eight bags of rubbish was removed by the Council.
We intend to do another clean up on the Lincoln Drive estate next Saturday and anyone who is interested is welcome to join us. For details please contact me via the blog or phone 736216

I thought street cleaning came out of our council tax again the public doing what they have already paid for whats happened to the road sweepers that use to come round regularly???????? All being usede in Wigan i suppose.
Anonymous beat me to it with his/her comment about street cleaning costs coming from council tax. It shouldn't have to be done by residents who have already paid the council to do it.
It seems that there is also a problem with the frequency of cleaning. Since the sad death of Ashton's main streetcleaner, Kevin, I have only three times seen a council employee sweeping or litter-picking in Ashton town centre.
I have twice contacted the cleansing department about the lack of sweeping machine visits to the estate where I live. I was informed that our street is scheduled to be machine swept every six weeks. The reality is that we are lucky if it's done every three months. On each occasion that I complained the machine arrived next day! That's knee-jerking not scheduling.
