Anti social behaviour - York Road

Residents of York Road have been subject to a high level of anti- social behaviour recently. It might be of interest to readers of this blog how this can be dealt with. The trend now is to use a multi-agency approach co-ordinated by Wigan Council. Involved in the process are the following:

1. the police
2 representatives of the Community Protection team of Wigan Council
3. youth service

After meetings with local residents the following steps have been taken:

1. The local police have stepped up their presence in the area over the past three weeks
2. A mosquito device has been installed in the area to deter young people from congregating there
3. The Council is hoping to install portable CCTV cameras in the area soon if the problem continues
4. Prevention of waiting lines will be laid down soon at the junction of York Road and Heath Street
5. The Council is looking to install alley gates to prevent entry at the back of 195 to 207 Heath Road
6. The Youth Service have been asked to help with mediation to resolve the problem.

I understand that the situation is better now.

I don't claim that this approach will solve all such problems in the area and I fully expect that I will be getting complaints from residents in the future about anti-social behaviour in their area.

However I hope it has done something for the residents in York Road to give them some peace of mind.

Hi Nigel

I am from York Road and had an incident on York Road last week (Junction with Cloverdale Drive). Myself and 2 other neighbours seen an incident about 11pm last Saturday, involving a youth that actually lives on Cloverdale. We know this as we reconginsed him, safe to say the parents are in complete denial. All these devices and CCTV are all well and good but unless we start holding the parents responsible we have no chance. I myself am defo considering taking the law into my own hands as is my neighbour as the parents when confronted will do nothing (hear no evil see now evil) and the Police response was pathetic, I understand they are stretched but when you see an incident and you know who is involved and the parents do nothing what do you do. Apparently this individual has had several parents confron them and they are in complete denial..... So in my eyes "an eye for an eye" and that is exactly what I will do if the authorities do nothing. The propblem with the devices you are talking about is pushing them further towards Ashton next to our houses. Its no good to move it to someone else who has not complained what you do is deal with it by talking to the parents if they dont do anything then its up to the community if you ask me, name them and shame them, then let us do our work. Then it will stop

I can see how frustrating this experience must be -no-one seems to do anything except make glib assurances that this and that is being dealt with. There have been incidents where kids are deliberately breaking wing mirrors etc and and I have heard mature people talk of vigilante action. The trouble is you will be the accused and end up in court -it isn't worth it As long as politicians twist statistics and tell us that there are extra police and crime is down etc nothing will change. Oh for public figures who will face the truth and give us some honesty!

If you and a witness saw an incident and can identify the youth in question please contact me and I am happy to with the matter in the strictest confidence.
