New Benches for the Town centre

One of the most satisfying aspects of being a councillor is seeing through a project that local residents have asked for.
In this respect I was delighted when last week, the council erected 2 benches on the Gerard Centre. I know from Labour Party surveys that the lack of seating in the town centre was an issue for local people, particularly the elderly.
I would like to thank the HMG Group (owners Gerard Centre) for allowing the benches to be placed on their property.
Do you know of any other sites that may benefit from seating in and around the town centre? Please contact me on 736216.

I was pleased to see the new benches, particularly as they are metal and will resist vandalism.

It would be good to see a similar bench or two on the market square. I seem to remember you were instrumental in obtaining two benches there some years ago, but they were wantonly destroyed by mindless vandals. They would have a harder time with metal ones, and we now have CCTV to help guard them. I'm sure many visitors to the market would appreciate seating there.

Thank you for your comment Steve. Your suggestion is a good one and I will be looking to put seating on the market in the new financial year - from April.
I will be consulting people about this matter and would welcome comments from anybody reading this blog.

Thank you for your response. I see from this week's Wigan Observer that out of £13,742 Brighter Boroughs monies spent by Ashton councillors last year, £11,787 was spent on Christmas trees and lights. Surely some of this cash could have been spent on more lasting improvements in the town? Using over 85% of this pot to decorate a couple of trees for a few weeks each year is an extravagance when there are so many other areas where this money could be spent.
